In looking forward to this year’s first major golf tournament in the form of the Masters from Augusta, Georgia ,can we achieve a European winner? There are several contenders from a Non -USA perspective. Top of the tee, you would like to go for Rory. However, I just cannot see it happening. I consider the switch to Nike was a bad call .He has played Titleist clubs all his life and they have never let him down. As we stand in mid-April I believe Rory still has doubts in the back of his mind if he made the correct decision. If it is money you are after, he was spot on but if you want to be remembered as a true legend, multiple major winner etc, I do not think so. O.K. the man from Holywood Golf Club has two majors but so has Andy North. “Andy who?” I can hear you saying.
What about Mr Westwood. He has a chance to be in the shake up but to win it, he better ask Luke Donald to putt for him.
Or perhaps Ian Poulter? He likes to be known as the “Postman”, because the postman always delivers .He blows hot and cold. Sometimes, you can find the house but not the letterbox. Very similar to his beloved Arsenal but there is no diving in the box at Augusta.
What about Justin Rose? He could be in the last couple of groups on Sunday. I was looking for big things from him this year after he took Mickelson’s scalp at last year’s Ryder Cup. He has got all the shots and can drive it as good as Westwood and can roll them in as he proved at Valhalla.
If there is no success from Europe, let’s hope the boys from South Africa in Messrs Schwartzel and Oosthuizen can bring it home.
